After a difficult 2020, 2021 was declared the European Year of Rail by the European Parliament and the Council. Through this initiative, the European Commission wishes to highlight the benefits of railways as a sustainable, smart and safe means of transport.
Adina V?lean, European Commissioner for Transport, noted: “Our future mobility must be sustainable, secure, comfortable and affordable. The train offers all this and much more! Our European Rail Year gives us the opportunity to rediscover this way of transport. Through a series of actions, we will utilize this opportunity to help the railway put its full potential to good use. I invite you all to take part in the European Year of Rail.”
The year will include a series of initiatives such as special events, exhibitions and campaigns – to promote railways as the most sustainable and innovative means of transport, as well as support for achieving the 2050 climate change objectives outlined in the European Green Agreement.
