Preparatory work for the work of the Competitive Dialogue focusing on Thessaloniki
Technical meetings of ERGOSE officials with local authorities of Northern Greece
Athens 8 July 2022 – Preparatory work for the Competitive Dialogue projects focusing on Thessaloniki is proceeding rapidly. In this context, technical meetings were held today at the offices of the Region of Central Macedonia with the participation of ERGOSE executives and local stakeholders of Northern Greece, concerning the presentation of the construction studies of the new railway line connecting Thessaloniki with Toxotes, the railway connection of the 6ου pier of the city’s port, as well as the construction of a suburban railway in western Thessaloniki. The tender budget of these projects amounts to almost €1.7 billion and their completion will provide the necessary development impetus to the capital city.
The technical studies include a description of the infrastructure and superstructure works, as well as the additional works that will be required for their effective implementation.
The construction of the new railway line Thessaloniki – Toxotes is part of the Eastern Railway Egnatia and will connect Thessaloniki with the port of Kavala and Xanthi and further north with Alexandroupolis and Ormenio. At the same time, it will serve the implementation of the connection between the ports of Northern Greece and the ports of Bulgaria in the Black Sea region (Burgas – Varna – Rousse).
With this project, 206 km of new railway line, with signalling and electrification, will be put into operation and it is estimated that the Thessaloniki-Alexandroupolis route will be reduced by at least 3 hours.
At the same time, two very important infrastructure projects for the city are being accelerated. The project of the railway connection of the 6th Thessaloniki pier will enhance intermodal freight transport to and from the port of Thessaloniki, upgrading its role in the freight transport of South-Eastern Europe. The Western Thessaloniki Suburban Railway project will complement the network of the Thessaloniki Metro currently under construction and in synergy with the urban transport networks, will contribute to increasing the use of public transport and consequently to reducing road traffic in the city.
After the meetings, the President and CEO of ERGOSE, Mr. Christos Vinis, mentioned: “Thessaloniki is at the core of the planning of a series of projects that will interconnect the so-called critical infrastructure – ports, freight stations and industrial areas – with the main railway network. All these infrastructures are ambitious projects that create a completely new landscape for passenger and freight transport and give Thessaloniki the development impetus it needs. Our main concern at ERGOSE is to give Thessaloniki the opportunity to develop by using a modern, reliable and safe railway network both as a vehicle as well as a “tool”. ”
