Signing of the contract for the construction of the railway project on the Rhododafni – Rio section
Thessaloniki, 22 November 2022.-
In the presence of the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport George Karagiannis and the CEO of ERGOSE Christos Vinis, the contract for the construction of the railway project in the Rhododafni – Rio section was signed today, during a special ceremony at the entrance of the Panagopoula tunnel in Achaia. The contract is another milestone in the course towards the completion of critical projects to upgrade the country’s central railway network.
The contractor of the project is the consortium TERNA S.A. – Mytilineos S.A. The cost of the project amounts to €129.5 million, while the works are expected to last 36 months.
The project has been co-funded by the European Union, through the NSRF 2014-2020, under the Operational Programme “Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development” (OP-Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development).
The construction of a double railway line and the installation of modern electrification and signaling systems with ETCS on the Rhododafni – Rio section of the project will improve safety, the capacity of the network and the service and comfort of passengers.
It is part of the projects with a total budget of €515.3 million, which have the aim of modernizing and reforming the Greek railway network as a whole.
In particular, the scope of the project concerns the construction of:
- 28.8 km of double railway superstructure
- 4 railway stations (Rododafni, Selianitika, Kamares, Agios Vasilios)
- 3 railway stations (Psathopyrgos, Arachovitika and Rio)
- electromechanical installations within the Panagopoula tunnel,
- a bi-directional signaling system with telecommand and ETCS level 1.

Regarding the signing of the contract, the President and CEO of ERGOSE Mr. Christos Vinis noted: “Over the last three years, with a steady pace and in full cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, we have been planning and implementing key projects, committed to the effort for the fastest possible upgrade of the Greek railway.
The construction of this project brings us one step closer to the strategic objective of providing our country with a railway network worthy of modern transport needs”.
