Action plan by ERGOSE for the development of a modern, safe and environmentally friendly rail network
Athens 30 June 2022 – The importance of rail infrastructure development in the promotion of green transport was highlighted by the President and CEO of ERGOSE, Mr Christos Vinis, from the podium of the Green Deal Greece 2022 conference organised yesterday by the Technical Chamber of Greece.
“With transport playing a particularly important role in the transition to a zero-carbon economy, rail is at the forefront of smart and sustainable mobility. ERGOSE has fully implemented an ambitious action plan to develop a modern, safe and environmentally friendly rail network,” the President and CEO of ERGOSE underlined.
Referring to the development strategy of this plan, which is in full alignment with the European Commission’s objectives for sustainable mobility, Mr.Vinis stressed that it was based on three pillars:
- Solving the problems identified in existing works and study contracts
- The immediate tendering and implementation of projects already included in financial instruments
- The preparation of a bold and unprecedented – given the standards of the Greek railway – tender programme with Competitive Dialogue, which interconnects the critical port infrastructure with the country’s main railway network
The President and CEO of ERGOSE, stressed that “with the successful implementation of the action plan we have developed, we have managed today to set in motion the largest rail project programme in the country’s history, exceeding €4.5 billion”.
Analyzing the progress of the implementation of the projects, Mr.Vinis pointed out that in addition to the tendering of seven projects, with a total budget of €515.3 million, for the upgrade of the existing network and the installation of electrification, signalling and telecommunications systems, the plan of the tenders includes additional new tenders during the summer, totaling €55 million.
“With this plan, the upgrading of the country’s central railway axis is essentially completed. The country’s rail network will be fully electrified, thus contributing even more decisively to the achievement of environmental goals, sustainable mobility and green transport in Greece.”
In his statement, the President and CEO of ERGOSE, referred to the programme for the implementation of projects through the Competitive Dialogue, totaling €4 billion.
These projects link the country’s major ports with the railway network. They strengthen the role of the country’s port infrastructure and upgrade the cross-border interconnection of Greece with south-eastern Europe. With the methods used, these projects will be environmentally friendly with a positive footprint for all stakeholders.
