Briefing in Parliament on two projects of critical importance for the Greek railway
Athens 9 June 2022 – For the pre-contractual procedure of two key projects with ERGOSE as contracting authority, was informed yesterday by the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Kostas Karamanlis, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, responsible for infrastructure, Mr. George Karagiannis and the President and CEO of ERGOSE, Mr. Christos Vinis, the Standing Committee on Production and Trade of the Greek Parliament. Specifically, the briefing concerned the project of the second phase of the development of the Athens Central Railway Station and the project of the installation of the electrification system in the new double railway line Kiato – Rododafni.
The second phase of the development of the Athens Central Railway Station, with a design budget of €42.1 million (including VAT), will be completed within three years. The project involves the realignment of the line layout, reconstruction of its functional elements (platforms, pedestrian crossings, etc.), installation of electrification and parallel construction of the necessary infrastructure (foundations) for the building works to be completed in the future.
The second key project is the electrification of the Kiato – Rhododafni section of the line, with a design budget of €84 million (including VAT) and will be implemented over a three-year horizon. The new double railway line is 70.6 km long and with electrification, trains will be able to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. At the same time, it includes telecommunication systems for passenger information, announcement system, emergency calls and intercom, closed-circuit television, plantings and installation of anti-noise barriers at identified points.
The two projects are funded by the Operational Program “Transport Infrastructure, Environment and Sustainable Development 2014-2020”.
The President and CEO of ERGOSE, Mr. Christos Vinis, said, “In coordination and cooperation with the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, we are proceeding with steady steps in the planning and implementation of projects that upgrade the Greek railway and at the same time contribute to the strengthening of the real economy.”
